I heard about this long ago in a psychology workshop that we had in the school where I used to teach. It is about being forced out of the comfort zone, the cocoon.... The eagle mother builds her nest with two layers- one, the soft downy upper layer so that the nestlings are comfortable and snug in the early days and the bottom a layer of thorns and all things sharp. When it is time for the babies to fly and they dither and refuse, the mamma , just pecks away the soft layer so that the nestlings are poked sharply with the thorns and are forced to fly....Animal kingdom is strange , the male cubs are always the first ones to be ousted by the mother tiger, and in a matriarch driven elephant herd it's more or less the same story !
So am I the eagle mother? I can never tell. I see my friends kids move out and away and hear them talk of the empty nest syndrome ...and I refuse to think about it - my Scarlett O Hara attitude at it's best! Till then one of my favorites.....from the few rock groups that I like !
I always told this story to my trainees. About being the Eagle mum. An eagle mum prepares the nest in two layers, first downy feathers and below that, the thorns. When it is time to fly she removes the downy feathers so that the fledglings who refuse to fly fall on the thorns and that makes them flap n fly away! Bhaskar always calls is cruelty, the bojjat mommy! But to me its a way to push one out of the comfort zone, for the world waits beyond! My kiddos moved out to their own place today. And despite being an eagle mum, I kind of miss the chatter. I knew in my heart I would miss having them around... But they need to find their wings!
